SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 04/08/2016
The Chapter's Director of Young AFCEANs Dave McCartens presented the Distinguished AFCEA Award to Cadet MS III Herman P. Hoffman, Jr., USA, Reserve Officers Training Corps, Cramer's Saber Battalion at the University of Rhode Island (URI) awards ceremony in April. He was awarded for excellence in engineering academics and professional military standards. Since 1919 over 25,000 students have taken basic ROTC courses at URI. In 1986, the Rhode Island Cadet Battalion was named in honor of First Parker Dresser Cramer who fell in combat in 1963 in Vietnam.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 11/06/2015
In November, the chapter enjoyed a special tour of the U.S. Navy's Submarine Force Library and Museum and historic ship Nautilus by Euro Cantillo, director of education at the Submarine Force Library and Museum. Lt. j.g. Daniel Mongiove, public affairs officer, USN, provided a brief on the history, mission and overview of the role of the Navy's Silent Service (Submarine Force) by the Submarine Base, Groton, Massachusetts. The tour included a luncheon at the Submarine Base galley, followed by a tour of the Submarine School.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 05/19/2015
The chapter presented an award to U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadet Daniel Siders during a May ceremony held at the academy's Leamy Hall Auditorium, New London, Connecticut. Cadet Siders is graduating and being commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard and reporting to USCGC Venturous in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The chapter presented an award to Army ROTC Cadet Jonathan T. Davis of Brown University during a May ceremony. The event was held at the Slavin Center on the Providence College campus in Rhode Island. Cadet Davis is entering into his senior year.

The chapter presented special achievement awards in April to the director of its Young AFCEANs (YACs) as well as the YAC leadership team for their commitment and dedication to the chapter over the past two years. They were applauded for their continued success in hosting events that bring relevance to the chapter and for their assistance with recruiting and retaining YAC members.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 01/10/2015
The chapter conducted an INCOSE Systems Engineering Certification professional preparation workshop during four Saturdays in January 2015 to help prepare SNE AFCEA members to take the INCOSE Systems Engineering Certification Exam. The course was successfully conducted locally and virtually online by AFCEA volunteer instructors: Lee Rossetti (Lockheed Martin Corporation); Joe Loda (Canyon Applied Technologies); Lt. Cmdr. Steven Myers (US Coast Guard Academy); Patrick Roach (Naval Undersea Warfare Center) and Glenn Eberhardt (Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division-Ship Systems Engineering Station). The workshop topics included Systems Engineering Overview; Generic Lifecycle Stages; Systems Engineering Technical Processes; Agreement Processes; Project Processes; Organizational Project–Enabling Processes; and Specialty Engineering.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 02/12/2015
The chapter presented a four-hour "Introduction to C4I Systems Architecture Principles Tutorial" in February. The tutorial covered C4I systems architecture principles, definitions and application; systems architecture views and products; architecture methods, and models overview; and C4I architecture and tool examples. The chapter tutorials are focused on C4I systems engineering professional development.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 02/12/2015
Courtney Wright, CSEP, the program manager for the International Council on Systems Engineering's (INCOSE's) Certification Program was a special guest speaker at the chapter's February luncheon. She spoke about INCOSE's Systems Engineering Professional Certification Program, its process and procedures to obtain the certification. She provided the chapter an overview of certification requirements, exam information and updates to the new INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 12/10/2014
Thomas F. Gannon, Ph.D., professor of practice, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was the guest speaker for the December chapter meeting. Gannon provided an overview and critique of systems engineering architecture development, design, trade-off study analysis and illustrations of associated architecture product views created as part of graduate coursework in systems engineering architecture and design using a real-world systems example. Gannon will help develop the chapter's C4I Systems Engineering Certificate Program.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 12/10/2014
Thomas F. Gannon, Ph.D., professor of practice, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, provided a four-hour tutorial in December titled "Introduction to Concepts of Systems Engineering." He discussed systems engineering as a multifaceted discipline involving human, organizational and various technical variables that work together to create complex systems. This tutorial provided a brief introduction and overview of the methods and disciplines that systems engineers use to define, develop and deploy systems. Topics covered included: systems engineering as a discipline; structure of complex engineered systems; system environment, building blocks, interfaces and interactions; systems engineering models and standards; and systems engineering throughout the system life cycle.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 10/31/2014
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) Officers' Club in New London, Connecticut, hosted in October the second annual Southern New England Young AFCEANs luncheon where Thomas Michelli, USCG, deputy assistant commandant for C4IT and deputy chief information officer, presented "The USCG's Role in Cybersecurity." He discussed the vision and mission of USCG cyber as well as the collaboration and coordination of USCG Cyber Command, C4IT Service Center and CG-6 Assistant Commandant for C4IT in combating cyber threats. More than 100 people attended the event, including USCGA faculty/staff, cadets, USCG tenant commands, chapter members and industry partners. Lt. Cmdr. Steven Myers, USCG, vice president of Southern New England Young AFCEA, coordinated the event.

Shannon Sullivan, AFCEA regional vice president, presented special AFCEA International awards to Dr. Tim Rudolph from the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, and to Dr. Gerard M. Exley from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport, Rhode Island, in recognition of their innovation, initiative and technical leadership and significant contributions to advance the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy's respectively command, control, communications, computer and intelligence (C4I) systems capabilities. SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 01/08/2014
The chapter swore in several new officers in January: Wayne (Doc) Sweitzer, vice president; David Miller, director of administrations; Denise Jones, treasurer; Joe Loda, director of professional development; Jairo Rugel, deputy directors of communications, and Lt. Michael Grochowski, USCG, a new Young AFCEAN Leadership Team member. Lee Rossetti, chapter president, awarded a certificate and welcomed Canyon Applied Technologies to the chapter as a new industry partner. Rossetti delivered the "State of Chapter" presentation and spoke of new chapter initiatives and goals. SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 07/19/2011
The chapter and guests toured the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Willow (WLB-202) in July at Naval Station Newport. Ensign Rachel Post, USCG, hosted the event. All Coast Guard ships are tasked with multiple duties from search and rescue to law enforcement. This class of ship is designed and built to position and maintain aids to navigation to keep the sea-based economy moving. The cutter has a controllable pitch propeller and thrusters, which give exceptional maneuverability to tend buoys offshore and in restricted waters.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 06/25/2011
Capt. Christopher Allen of the Rhode Island National Guard, 281st Combat Communications Group (CCG), received his AFCEA Lifetime Membership certificate at the 2011 Rhode Island National Guard Open House and Air Show in June. The 281st CCG received the 2010 Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The 281st CCG planned and managed communications for all manmade and natural disasters for events such as the Red River flood, the G20 Summit, Deepwater Horizons and Hurricane Earl. In addition, it provided command and control for eight separate locations during operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

The chapter presented its essay awards at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in June. Lt. Col. Francisco DeCarvalho, USA, received first prize in the Information Operation Category. Lt. Cmdr. Elisha Burleson, USN, won the General C4ISR Category, and Maj. David Violand, USA, received honorable mention. Col. DeCarvahlo's next duty is as the director of civil military operations and information operations (G-9/G-7) at the 8th Army Headquarters in Yong San, Korea.

The chapter presented awards for professional writing and research at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in June. Lt. Col. Francisco DeCarvalho, USA, received the first prize in the Information Operations category. He is assigned to the 8th Army Headquarters in Yongsan, Korea, where he will be the director of civil military operations and information operations (G-9/G-7). The chapter awarded first prize for the General C4ISR category to Lt. Cmdr. Elisha Burleson, USN, and Maj. David Violand, USA, received an honorable mention.

The chapter presented it Honor Award to ROTC Cadet Luke McCabe in April. The ceremony was held at the University of Rhode Island. Cadet McCabe will enter his final year at Rogers Williams University as the company commander. McCabe is from Weymouth, Massachusetts, and is majoring in economics.

Professor James P. Murray of the Naval War College hosted a briefing on the Maritime Operations Center training at the chapter's April meeting. This training of the operational level of naval warfare is done at Evans Hall at the Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island.

In March, the chapter visited the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS). Capt. Neil Parrot, USN, commanding officer of the SWOS, greeted the chapter members and gave an introduction to the command. Lt. Phil Garrow, USN, gave a tour that included time on the ship bridge trainers.

In October, Joe Ducas, chapter president, and Bob Kennedy, regional vice president, met with members of the Air Force ROTC at the University of Connecticut. The group visited the Naval Station Newport for a luncheon and the opportunity to experience the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter cockpit simulator.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 08/24/2010
In August, the chapter welcomed its newest corporate member, the Siemon Company. Located in Watertown, Connecticut, the company was founded in 1903 by Carl Siemon, and the fifth generation of family members currently supplies information technology design, engineering, hardware and services to customers worldwide. The chapter also congratulated Cadet Capt. Aaron Nelson, Air Force ROTC, for winning an AFCEA scholarship. Aaron is from Willington, Connecticut, and he is in the class of 2012 at the University of Connecticut.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 06/11/2010
The chapter presented several awards at the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, in June. Essays in two categories were honored: information operations and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR). Lt. Cmdr. Matthew J. Baldwin, USN, won the Information Operations Award with his essay "New Media: Adapting Information Operations.” Lt. Cmdr. Justin M. Canfield, USN, won the C4ISR Award with his essay "Say Again? Lessons from Hurricane Katrina in Spectrum Management and Communications Interoperability.” Both recipients attended the College of Naval Command and Staff and graduated on June 11, 2010.

In May, the chapter presented an annual AFCEA International award to a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. This year's award went to Cadet Stephen Hills. He majored in electrical engineering. The ceremony and graduation were conducted despite loss of electrical power and phone service.

In April, the chapter presented its AFCEA ROTC Award to Cadet Matthew Connors of the Cramer's Saber Battalion. Cadet Connors is majoring in communications at the University of Rhode Island. Later in April, several chapter members attended the Senior Project Review at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The chapter presented an award at the academy's graduation ceremony in May.

In May, the chapter participated in the U.S. Army Patriot Battalion Reserve Officers' training corps awards ceremony, held at Providence College. The chapter presented an award to Army Cadet Timothy Swanton, a civil engineering major at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. The chapter will be presenting additional awards at the Coast Guard Academy and the University of Rhode Island.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 03/13/2009
In March, Capt. Jeffrey S. Jones, USN, commanding officer, Surface Warfare Officers School Command (SWOS), and Information Technology Senior Chief Ken Robertson, USN, SWOS, gave the chapter a tour of the school's state-of-the-art training systems, including some of the finest ship simulators. After the tour, the members discussed chapter business, including participation in the 2009 Rhode Island Defense and Oceanography Day.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 01/12/2009
In January, the chapter held a planning meeting that was hosted by Louis Francis at the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation in Providence, Rhode Island. On behalf of Natelli Systems, Guy Natelli was welcomed as a new corporate member. Joe Ducas was elected chapter president, and Chris Willard, TEKsystems, was elected vice president for communications. Willard created the chapter's new Web site, http://afcea-ct-ri.org. The chapter planned for future meetings to be held at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 05/20/2008
At the U.S. Coast Guard Academy scholarship awards ceremony in May, Cadet First Class Manatchai Fangsuwannark, USCG, an exchange student from Thailand, received the AFCEA award from Cdr. Gregory Johnson, USCG, for his senior design project, 'Removing Spatial Interference from Digital Images.' The AFCEA award is given to the cadet who demonstrates the highest proficiency and skill in communications and electronics.

In June, the chapter presented the first prize in the Information Operations category to Maj. Christopher A. Claus, USAF, at the Naval War College in Newport, RI, from which Maj. SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 04/05/2008
The chapter participated in the Connecticut ROTC awards luncheon at the University of Connecticut in April. Chapter awards were presented to Cadet Christopher Stewart of Air Force ROTC Detachment 115 and Cadet Michael Prescott of the Nathan Hale Battalion Army ROTC. Cadet Stewart is majoring in electrical engineering at the University of Connecticut. Cadet Prescott will graduate from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and has orders to report to Fort Hood, Texas. The chapter will present similar awards to the Rhode Island ROTC of the Patriot and Cramer Sabers Battalions.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 07/14/2007
In June the chapter honored three June 2007 graduates of the Naval War College with awards for excellence. The first prize in the Information Warfare Category was awarded to Maj. Jill L. Wagner, USA, a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff, for her essay 'The Effects of Network-Centric Warfare on Leadership: Fresh Perspectives for the Operational Leader.' The first prize in the All Other Category was awarded to Maj. Chad J. Davis, USAF, a graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff for his essay 'Toward Improved Operational Command and Control of Space Weapons.' Honorable mention was given to Lt. Cmdr. Jon-Paul LaBruzzo US Navy for his essay titled 'Influencing Friends and Allies; Information Operations Doctrine and the Role of the Combatant Commander.' SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 05/11/2007
In May the chapter presented awards to two Rhode Island Reserve Offices Training Corps cadets. The award for the Patriot Battalion was presented at Providence College, where Cadet Sean Mckenna was selected to receive the AFCEA Honor Award for 2007. The Cramer's Sabers Battalion award was presented to Cadet Ryan Andersen of University of Rhode Island (URI), where he is in his third year of study in mechanical engineering.

SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CHAPTER - 10/19/2006
Renowned explosives expert Professor Jimmie Oxley, a University of Rhode Island chemistry professor, was the chapter's guest speaker for a luncheon at the Newport Officers Club in October.
Prof. Oxley is frequently called upon to lend her expertise to high profile national and international incidences. She is a founding member of the Rhode Island Forensic Science Partnership. The chapter awarded an educational grant to teacher Avery Lenhart of the Montessori Discovery School in Norwich, Connecticut. Avery plans to use the money to help her develop her science program for the upper elementary students.
Dr. Gregory Johnson, chapter president, presented an AFCEA scholarship to Air Force ROTC Cadet Mary Hoyer on 31 August 2006. Cadet Hoyer is currently a senior Electrical Engineering major at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. She plans on graduating in May 2008, at which time she will receive a commission into the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant.
