The chapter's CzechCyberTeam (an AFCEA student club) won the qualifiers of Midnight Sun Capture the Flag (CTF) competition (https://midnightsunctf.se) in the AFCEA category and will attend the finals in Sweden.
Midnight Sun CTF is one of the world's largest CTF events. In 2021, 662 teams from 87 countries took part. The chapter's team scored 882 points and placed 42nd in the overall standings.
A CTF competition provides the opportunity for teams (or individuals) to challenge and compete in the art of computer security. In the simplest case, the team gathers points by finding and exploiting vulnerabilities to gain access to hidden or protected data, known as the "flag."
Recently, the traditional world has changed dramatically and very quickly. The conditions for the activities of the association have also changed. Emergencies, quarantines and other measures do not allow for the organization of traditional events. Governments and entire societies are justifiably focused on saving lives and supporting people on the front line. We also must adapt to survive and offer members and partners with services that match tradition, knowledge and capabilities. Modern companies are already dependent on information and communications technology (ICT), and now are even more reliant (working from home, video conferencing, reliance on advanced technologies, technologies in the healthcare sector, etc.). Unfortunately, this dependence carries a number of risks. We must be more cautious, knowledgeable and prepared. We need to work together and help people and institutions for whom ICT is needed, but not as a core business. Examples of best practices include chapter ac ... READ MORE

Seven speakers and 42 attendees from government, academia and the private sector discussed all the aspects of cloud computing, including security and its use for confidential information. Josef Prokes, deputy director, Office For Personal Data Protection, introduced a new European view on how to protect personal data in the cloud. This view was adopted by all European Union nations this July. Martin Luk, a lawyer from Weinhold Legal, explained all the legal aspects of cloud computing. He focused his presentation not only on data protection but also on which aspects are important when preparing a service-level agreement about cloud computing.
"Monitoring is legal." That notion resounded at the June security seminar focused on "Monitoring and Network Security" organized at the Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague. The information and communications technology and security experts discussed not only technical but also legal and ethical aspects of monitoring network traffic. Extensive discussions touched in particular upon the legality of monitoring network traffic and data storage. The seminar also heard the view that monitoring and record keeping of data traffic is legal if the activity is not used to obtain private and sensitive data. In any event, the seminar pointed out deficiencies in the legislation, as well as various interpretations of this issue. The speakers at the seminar were representing public administration (e.g. the Czech Telecommunication Office), the legal community, academia and the private sector.
In May, the Rome and Czech chapters organized the first European business-to-business (B2B) speed-networking meeting in Prague. Twenty-two representatives from nine companies and four countries (Czech Republic, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia) met to discuss potential cooperation in information and communication technology, cybersecurity and the defense area. During the seven-hour meeting, they shared company information and experiences and offers to potential partners. Eight potential partnerships resulted from the meeting. The next B2B meeting will accompany AFCEA TechNet International Conference & Exhibition in Rome this October.
In May, attendees gathered for a VIP dinner organized by AFCEA Europe in honor of the TechNet Europe and ITTE 2012 conferences. During the dinner, Kent Schneider, president and chief executive officer of AFCEA International, presented an engraved plaque on behalf of the AFCEA Educational Foundation's Board of Directors to Petr Jirasek, a member of AFCEA's Executive Committee, for his contribution and service to the Czech Chapter. Schneider also presented Rear Adm. Carlos R. Rodolfo, PON (Ret.), Portugal Chapter President, with a Model Chapter Award for 2012. Attendees included Gen. Vlastimil Picek, CZA, chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces; Lt. Gen. Petr Pavel, CZA, future chief of the General Staff of the Czech Armed Forces; Maj. Gen. Klaus-Peter Treche, GEA (Ret.), general manager of AFCEA Europe; and 35 additional attendees representing 14 European chapters.
The chapter established the first Central European AFCEA student club in Prague at the National Police Academy in April. The club has six members with a goal of attracting 10 to 15 members by the end of this year. In addition, the student club will support a student symposium organized by AFCEA Europe in Prague in May 2012 along with supporting the chapter's cybersecurity activities and other association-wide student initiatives.
